I just finished watching the last of the five movies in Babylon 5: The Movie Collection, which brings me to the end of my second viewing of the entire Babylon 5 series. Neither season five nor the movies come very close to the quality of the first four seasons, but it was still fun to watch the whole series again. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to watch them all again some day; maybe I'll have the chance to bring someone new along for the ride. Maybe even one of my daughters? I guess I should start getting them into science fiction now!

I’d been waiting for just the right moment to buy Gattaca on DVD, and moments don’t get any better than this. This is one of the very few movies that I would actually bother to own; if you haven’t seen it, you must! Come on over and we’ll have a little Gattaca party!

Speaking of videos, Julie and I have been on a bit of a movie-watching spree – for us, at least. We have an unlimited two-for-one Blockbuster coupon that expires in a few days, our library has a good supply of “real” videos for borrowing, and we've been taking advantage of both. Videos we've seen recently, or will be watching shortly:

• Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Miracle
• The Lion King 1½ (mostly for the kids)
• Unbreakable
• Seabiscuit
• Cheaper by the Dozen

Now, unlike some people I know (Julie's grandmother and my advisor from Calvin belong to the Sherman St. CRC Film-Discussion Small Group, and I'm sure the discussion is lively), I watch movies mostly for their entertainment value, and I'm easily entertained. We've seen all but the last two in the list above thus far, and I've enjoyed them all. It's a rare movie that makes me want to turn it off, but I'm fairly cautious in my movie selection, so that may have something to do with it...

Last week, we found the fourth season of Babylon 5 at Costco for as cheap as I could find it anywhere online, so we bought it. Julie and I finally sat down to watch the first episode tonight, and it was great. Julie is quite kind to watch it with me -- we own and have watched the first three seasons, of course -- though I hope that she actually enjoys it from time to time. I've mentioned on my work blog that I believe Babylon 5 to be the best Science Fiction that's ever graced the television screen, so I won't go into that here. Suffice it to say that if you enjoyed the best of Star Trek, you should really give Babylon 5 a try. I saw these episodes when they were first released, of course, but they're well worth seeing again. We own very few videos that aren't for kids, but I'm willing to pay to see Babylon 5 again. It's that good.
